National Museum of Wildlife Art to Exhibit Above the Clouds: Art of the Alpine

June 15, 2022

The National Museum of Wildlife Art (NMWA) is hosting a collaborative exhibition, Above the Clouds: Art of the Alpine, June 25 – September 18, 2022. It is bilingual (English/Spanish) and a collaboration between NMWA, Jackson Hole community members, and regional artists.

Above the Clouds highlights the cold, wind-blown alpine biome, home to a diversity of life that thrives in an environment few humans experience. The exhibition features 36 juried works from regional artists (Colorado, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming), and art from local K-12 students. Additionally, the exhibition will include a video component with the premiere of the newest Bisoncast video series episode, Above the Clouds.

Of the 36 different artists featured in the exhibition, some are return participants while others will be showing at the Museum for the first time. “We are so excited to have such a broad range of artists sharing their vision of the beauty, fragility, and resilience of alpine ecosystems that inspire these works,” says Julia Spencer, assistant curator of education. “This exhibit provides a fantastic opportunity for the Museum and for our community to see many fresh perspectives on wildlife art and to connect to the alpine environment, which few people get to experience and spend time in.”

Above the Clouds is a truly immersive experience for visitors. “We hope that visitors will be inspired by the artwork on the walls, and by our educational Bisoncast episode. The exhibition encourages visitors to explore art and our human connection to alpine environments through exploration of the Rocky Mountains, so they can learn more about this imperiled ecosystem, and contribute their own artwork by creating paper flowers to place on our ‘community cliff’ located within the exhibit. It is truly a community exhibition that all ages can enjoy,” says Spencer.

A Popcorn & Premiere Party will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2022, from 5 – 7 p.m., to celebrate the exhibition opening and premiere the Bisoncast episode Above the Clouds, in the Cook Auditorium, for the very first time! Visitors can enjoy complimentary popcorn and art making, two film screenings (5:15 and 6:15 p.m.), and beverages for purchase from Palate. The second screening will have an introduction and subtitles in Spanish. This event is generously sponsored by First Republic Bank.

The Above the Clouds: Art of the Alpine exhibition is generously sponsored by the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole and Lea Charitable Trust.
